Cuzzin's Hole In One

I witnessed the impossible. Chris got a hole in one last week. It's something you don't see very often. The shot didn't look that great off the tee. In fact it looked bunker bound. It just cleared the bunker in front of the green and started to roll. I thought he was just gonna be close to the hole on a long sloped green. Birdie chance I thought. As we got closer to the green we couldn't see his ball. Did it roll off? Nope. IT WAS IN THE HOLE! I never heard a grown man screaming like that ever.

Hole in One

Funny thing happened on the course after my last post.
I got a freakin HOLE IN ONE!!
Can you believe that?
It was the 12th hole Par3 172yards. I was using that new 3 hybrid I mentioned.....it's called the Cobra Baffler and I'm buying the 5 ASAP.
My buddy says it was the ugliest - prettiest shot he's ever seen.
It was weird.
I should, if I hit it right, get about 200-220 yards out of this club, but I'm not that good or consistent yet with it. Basically ,I just try to make easy contact with it and try to keep it on target.
All I was thinking when I hit it was "nice and easy" I didn't want to cream it over the green.
The ball seems to really JUMP off the clubface when you make sweetspot contact and it did this time.
I actually hit it a little short. There were 2 bunkers guarding the front left side of the green. The flag was front center with about 30yards of green behind it.
My ball bounced between the two bunkers and sorta went sideways toward the second cut....from there it looked as though the grass grabbed and then THREW the ball toward the cup. We lost sight of the ball because the hole is slightly elevated.
I said something like "that might be pretty close bro".
So we're driving up to the pin and I'm peeking/standing up in the cart to try and see where the ball ended up.
The closer we get to it the more I'm thinking that I must have lost the ball somehow....we had one ball on the far right second cut, but my ball was on the left...or so I thought. There was soooo much green behind the pin, I thought there was no way the ball had that much steam to roll all the way back there! I was puzzled.
So one of my boys goes, "Dude check in the cup..it's in the cup".
I tiptoed up to the thing as if I might scare it out or something and sure enough ...."IT'S IN THE HOLE!!!"
Apparently I threw my hands up and screamed that pretty loud. Ooops.I had this goofy grin that I could not shake for the rest of the night.
I went out after and celebrated a little too hard I think.
My checklist worked I think.

Things to work on

It's that time of the week again. You know the time....it's a day away from GOLF!!
Every week I make a mental checklist of things that I absolutely MUST improve on next time I hit the course.
The moment I get there I get all giddy cause I'm ACTUALLY playing instead of talking about playing and promptly forget everything that I was supposed to remember. It's sad.
So I'm going to try EXTRA hard to not do that tomorrow.

Sample of stuff I'm going to remember to do:
  1. Not hitting my driver (long story, but I have a new 3 hybrid I plan on using instead)
  2. Work on my swing rhythm 1-2-3 back/1-2-3 through
  3. Check and recheck my grip and "v' alignment (read something that I loved when it comes to grip....Grip it like you're holding a bird, you don't want to kill it but you don't want it to fly away either)
  4. No more dribbles! (repeated 20yard fart shots to the green cause I came up on the ball before I hit the damn thing)
There is much much more. If I can remember these to start I'll be on the right track.
Let you guys know how it works out.

Windy Play

Keep it low on the wind and it will have less effect on the ball trajectory. Try a flat swing and keep your hands ahead of the clubhead. Also try puching shots inside of 100 yards rather than putting up a pitch. O your drives you must hit the ball with minimal to no side spin or the wind will accentuate the direction of travel.

Playing In a Tropical Storm

Well here in New Orleans we have been catching bands from hurricane Ike. We played golf yesterday in tropical storm force winds. It really wasn't as bad as one would think. The worst part was chasing after my hat a few times. It made the game a little more interesting dealing with the high winds. It didn't effect putting as much as I thought it would except on a few holes. Off the tee it's wasn't too bad either. Even if the wind caught the ball it wasn't disastrous. I definitely had to think about my shots a little more and compensate for the wind. Yeah, there were a few times when I came came up short because of the wind. There were also a few times when the wind helped carry the ball as well. What I thought was going to be a horrible round actually turned out better than expected. I scored 2 strokes less than the previous day when the wind was not as bad.

Joel Coe has some great advice for Playing In Scotland/Wind? from Jaacob Bowden's Swing Man Golf Blog.
